In the human sciences, experimental research is used to establish causal relationships. However, the extrapolation of these results to the target population can be problematic. To facilitate extrapolation, we propose to use the statistical technique Latent Class Regression Analysis in combination with the analogical reasoning theory for extrapolation. This statistical technique can identify latent classes that differ in the effect of X on Y. In order to extrapolate by means of analogical reasoning, one can characterize the latent classes by a (...) combination of features, and then compare these features to features of the target. This explorative article conceptualizes the myth as a cultural locus where different concepts are ordered forming semantic networks and as a social narrative reflecting emotional predispositions toward the social significance of an episode in the past. The article analyzes the semantic network formed within the Arthurian myth by the concepts Britain and imperium. It identifies a persistent semilogical dynamic between both concepts but shifting emotional responses and temporalities: loss and longing among the Welsh (sixth century to eleventh century), fixing the (...) memory in the past; joy among the English (twelfth century to fifteenth century), bringing the memory into the present; and anxiety and desire among Welsh and English (sixteenth century) projecting the memory to the future. During the seventeenth century, the semantic network left the Arthurian myth, which fell into a relative oblivion. (shrink)

In response to the COVID‐19 pandemic philosophers and governments have proposed scarce resource allocation guidelines. Their purpose is to advise healthcare professionals on how to ethically allocate scarce medical resources. One challenging feature of the pandemic has been the large numbers of patients needing mechanical ventilatory support. Guidelines have paradigmatically focused on the question of what doctors should do if they have fewer ventilators than patients who need respiratory support: which patient should get the ventilator? There is, however, an important (...) higher level allocation problem. Namely, how are we to ethically distribute newly obtained ventilators across hospitals: which hospital should get the ventilator(s)? In this paper, we identify a set of principles for allocating newly obtained ventilators across hospitals. We focus particularly on low and middle income countries, who frequently have limited pre‐existing intensive care capacity, and have needed to source additional ventilators. We first provide some background. Second, we argue that the main population healthcare aim during the COVID‐19 pandemic should be to save the most lives. Next, we assess a series of potential heuristics or principles that could be used to guide allocation: allocation to the most densely populated cities, random allocation, allocation based on the ratio of patients to ICU personnel, prioritisation in terms of intrahospital mortality, prioritisation of younger populations, and prioritisation in terms of population mortality. We conclude by providing a plausible ranking of the principles, while noting a number of epistemological challenges, in terms of how they best further the aim of increasing the probability of saving the most lives. La tradición republicana y la tradición liberal no aportan un marco de entendimiento entre culturas diversas. El diseño ético y político de la sociedad plural, capaz de acomodar el "collage" de culturas en el que vivimos, tiene que ser creado. Las concepciones morales más preponderantes, en este sentido, son el relativismo, el universalismo y el fundamentalismo. Todas estas posiciones poseen límites y posibilidades diferentes. El autor opta por defender un "modus vivendi" entre culturas que no acabe en la indiferencia o (...) la condescendencia hacia el otro, el extranjero -inmigrante o refugiado-. El "modus vivendi" defendido debe superar la mera coexistencia entre culturas para adoptar un cosmopolitismo que exige sacrificios solidarios en beneficio de los que nos son culturalmente extraños. Este "modus vivendi" abierto a los otros puede favorecer un diálogo auténtico entre culturas a partir del reconocimiento de sus diversidades, no homologables o priorizables en diferente grado desde el "etnocentrismo" occidental. En este artículo se analizan 177 aulas de secundaria y se observa que el AC no está suficientemente asentado pero que su uso es sensible a la asignatura, la edad del profesor y el (...) tipo de aula. Chantal Mouffe ha criticado con vehemencia la propuesta deliberativa de Jürgen Habermas por lo que interpreta como una negación del conflicto político. El objetivo de este trabajo es reconsiderar esta objeción. Para ello se reconstruye la crítica mouffeana a partir de cuatro diferentes planos analíticos en lo que refiere a las posibilidades de comprensión y aceptación del antagonismo. En contra de lo sostenido por Mouffe, afirmamos que a pesar de que el modelo deliberativo coloca un énfasis prioritario en la dimensión (...) consensual de la práctica comunicativa, el conflicto constituye un supuesto necesario e irreductible que está presente en la base del edificio teórico de la propuesta habermasiana. Chantal Mouffe has strongly criticized the Jürgen Habermas' deliberative proposal for what she asserts is the negation of political conflict. In this paper we reconsider this objection by rebuilding this critique through four different dimensions which consider the possibilities of comprehension and acceptation of antagonism. Thus, in opposition to what Mouffe supports, we assert that even though his deliberative model emphasizes the consensual dimension of the communicative practice, conflict lays on the basis of the Habermas' theoretical structure as a necessary and unavoidable concept. Este artículo presenta una revisión del concepto de sujeto neoliberal a través de sus distintas caracterizaciones en la filosofía política contemporánea. Bajo las nociones de empresa, deuda y reto, se estudian las obras de los principales autores que se han ocupado de la subjetividad neoliberal y se muestran sus diferencias, así como el hilo conductor que, mediante acuerdos implícitos, ha avanzado la investigación hasta alcanzar una concepción del sujeto neoliberal como aquel que toma su vida como una sucesión de retos (...) deportivos. Así, se concluye que el concepto de reto ha recogido los análisis basados en la empresa y en la deuda, ofreciendo la definición más completa y exacta del sujeto neoliberal. (shrink)

Résumé L'article vise à montrer que le langage est intimement lié au monde social et que la clarification d'une telle relation dépend du fait de considérer sur un même plan les énoncés et les actions, ce qui conduit à considérer l'énonciation par le langage comme un type de comportement partagé. Cela signifie que la langue ne sert pas seulement les besoins de la vie sociale en tant que moyen d'intercompréhension. De façon relativement autonome, le langage fonctionne dans des conditions de (...) réalisation qui sont des relations sociales très segmentées et hiérarchisées. L'hypothèse est qu'il est nécessaire, comme point de départ de l'analyse du caractère social du langage, de reconnaître la valeur performative qu'ont les énoncés, du fait qu'ils contiennent, dans le domaine des actes de langage, un certain pouvoir effectif ajusté aux conditions sociales qui détermine leur énonciation. Resumen El artículo tiene el objetivo de mostrar que el lenguaje está íntimamente vinculado con el mundo social y que aclarar tal relación depende de considerar en un mismo plano de dependencia a los enunciados y a las acciones - lo que lleva a considerar al lenguaje como un tipo de comportamiento compartido. Eso quiere decir que el lenguaje no solo sirve a las necesidades de la vida social como medio de intercomprensión. Sobre un fondo relativamente autónomo -caracterizable en las consideraciones sobre los matices semánticos introducidos por las significaciones implícitas- el lenguaje funciona en condiciones de realización que son relaciones sociales altamente segmentadas y jerarquizadas. La hipótesis es que el lenguaje se realiza socialmente en la medida en que facilita a los individuos una forma de contacto. Pero también insistimos en que como punto de partida para el análisis del carácter social del lenguaje es necesario reconocer el valor performativo que tienen los enunciados en cuanto comportan, en el ámbito de los hechos del habla, un cierto poder realizativo ajustado a condiciones sociales que determinan los caminos de tal realización. El presente artículo aborda diferentes facetas del concepto de vida en la obra de Ortega y Gasset. Para el filósofo español, la vida humana es un existir indigente en comparación con el ser suficiente de la sustancia o cosa, por eso el hombre es un ente que se hace a sí mismo. Es la causa de sí mismo en el doble sentido: primero, porque se hace a sí mismo y, segundo, porque tiene la capacidad de decidir qué quiere hacer y (...) cómo. Ortega sostiene que ser libre significa evitar identificaciones codificadoras del mundo, tener la posibilidad de superarse a sí mismo, realizar su vocación. Esto quiere decir que cada ser humano debe encontrar su propio yo, su mismidad, en volver a estar de acuerdo consigo mismo y aclarar: cuál es su sincera actitud hacia cada cosa. No importa de qué actitud se trate, sea tonta o inteligente. Lo importante es que cada ser humano, en cada situación, sienta y piense lo que realmente siente y piensa. En el artículo se muestra la vulnerabilidad de esta posición existencialista que consiste en que al hombre se le encarga la responsabilidad ante sus convicciones , pero no por sus convicciones. In the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers in some countries were forced to make distressing triaging decisions about which individual patients should receive potentially life-saving treatment. Much of the ethical discussion prompted by the pandemic has concerned which moral principles should ground our response to these individual triage questions. In this paper we aim to broaden the scope of this discussion by considering the ethics of broader structural allocation decisions raised by the COVID-19 pandemic. More specifically, we (...) consider how nations ought to distribute a scarce life-saving resource across healthcare regions in a public health emergency, particularly in view of regional differences in projected need and existing capacity. We call this the regional triage question. Using the case study of ventilators in the COVID-19 pandemic, we show how the moral frameworks that we might adopt in response to individual triage decisions do not translate straightforwardly to this regional-level triage question. Having outlined what we take to be a plausible egalitarian approach to the regional triage question, we go on to propose a novel way of operationalising the ‘save the most lives’ principle in this context. We claim that the latter principle ought to take some precedence in the regional triage question, but also note important limitations to the extent of the influence that it should have in regional allocation decisions. This commentary argues that, in contrast to the view of Professor Gonzalez, Aristotle’s account of final causation is not very helpful for addressing contemporary concerns. Aristotle presents it as a type of cause, but, when one considers Aristotle’s distinction between facts and explanations, a final cause is better viewed as simply a fact. It is true that organisms show an internal directedness towards an end, but one can still ask why this is the case. Because of its limitations, Aristotle’s (...) account of final causes is not a third ontological region between materialism and intelligent design, but its lack of explanation leaves it open to attack from either side. Tanto Tomás de Aquino como Husserl coinciden, respecto a la teoría sobre la verdad, en pensar que (debido a la adecuación) el intelecto hace una copia exacta (absoluta) de una cosa siempre idéntica (igualmente absoluta), y que gracias a ello refutan el relativismo. Pero Julián Marías, entusiasta de la verdad, critica al absolutismo y al relativismo, y piensa que ambos están basados en la verdad como adecuación. La visión que sobre la verdad tiene Marías es consecuencia de su respeto a (...) la realidad, organizada en perspectiva: esta es de la realidad, no del hombre que la mira. Por ello ninguna verdad agota la realidad. Los partidarios de la adecuación suelen aplicar su esquema mental a los objetos irreales o ideales, suponiendo que la realidad como tal, caótica para ellos por la multitud de puntos de vista diferentes, está desorganizada y es fuente de relativismo. Enrique Gonzalez Fernández estudia en este libro el pensamiento y la obra de Julián Marías (1914-2005), desde la admiración y el conocimiento personal del filósofo católico que compaginó la fe y la razón. La vida y la obra de Marías estuvieron siempre orientadas hacia Dios, y nunca se desanimó en su empeño por construir una filosofía más apta para hacer inteligible la revelación cristiana. De ahí el calificativo de «apóstol de la divina razón». Ante las realidades de la filosofía (...) y del cristianismo, Marías hace una considerable innovación intelectual desde «la perspectiva religiosa en el estudio de los problemas, sin abandonarla en un solo momento». Como católico responsable y, por tanto, innovador, él cree «que es precisamente esa perspectiva religiosa la que permite ver en serio la conexión entre ambas realidades, la que abre el horizonte para una manera nueva, y rigurosamente filosófica, de hacer filosofía». En este libro (de 589 págs.) se muestra cómo Ortega descubrió la vía o método de la razón vital, que permite comprender la realidad. Gracias a este método de la razón vital, Julián Marías ha llegado a una nueva concepción de la filosofía y del cristianismo. Y por ello ha llegado a ser el "apóstol de la divina razón" justificadora tanto del cristianismo como de ese quehacer que llamamos filosofía, la cual es tan necesaria para él que sin ella nos (...) quedamos privados de los instrumentos intelectuales adecuados para comprender a Dios. Expone lo más fielmente posible la divina razón filosófica y teológica de Julián Marías, dando cuenta de su dilatada obra, dejando que él nos “hable” con los textos que escribió. El presente estudio atiende a un deseo expresado por él mismo de poner sus escritos en conexión: «cuando he publicado un libro, se ha hablado de él casi siempre como si fuese “único”, sin intentar casi nunca ponerlo en conexión con los anteriores, menos aún intentar hacer la suma. Es un carácter que valdría la pena examinar». Al poner en conexión su densa obra, este libro busca principalmente sistematizarla, así como completar con lo que dice en unos libros lo que falta, aparece solo apuntado o está en trance de maduración en otros. Porque, como todo pensador, Julián Marías tiene también sus deficiencias, una de las cuales (la principal) es que no hizo una sistematización rigurosa de su filosofía: esta fue apareciendo progresivamente en el curso de su vida hasta los últimos artículos —unos 250— que dictó al autor del presente libro. No pudo hacer esa tarea por falta de tiempo. Y porque no se daba importancia. Muchos lectores resbalan sobre sus últimos libros, como "Persona" o "La perspectiva cristiana" —brevísimos porque así lo quiso su autor, que modestamente no insistía acerca de todo lo que descubren y de lo que implica cada frase— sin apenas sospechar que nos encontramos ante obras monumentales, realmente innovadoras. Realizar esa sistematización de toda su obra no es tarea fácil. En todo caso, nos damos cuenta de la genialidad de Julián Marías —que además escribe con admirable talento literario, «con su diamantina prosa» —, según la siguiente definición, en un libro suyo de literatura, a propósito de su amigo Azorín: «Un genio es quien modifica nuestra manera de ver la realidad, de tal manera que ya forma parte de nosotros» . Lejos de ser un fenómeno del pasado, esta filosofía es una posibilidad futura, particularmente de América. Como dice Harold Raley, «el pensamiento de Marías está por descubrirse. Yo soy una realidad cambiante, no idéntica, pero yo soy _el mismo_ que antes y que después; hay, por tanto, una esencial _mismidad,_ que no es «identidad» en el sentido de las cosas o, más aún, de los objetos ideales. A diferencia del yo idéntico, estoy afectado por la circunstancialidad. Para el idealismo —desde Descartes hasta Husserl—, el ser del hombre es conciencia, _subjetividad,_ en la que el yo está encerrado, de modo que el gran problema es el acceso a (...) los otros: para resolverlo, Husserl habla de la «intersubjetividad monadológica», subsecuente a un previo «solipsismo monadológico»; y yo (idéntico a los otros: objetos que me son presentes) sería intercambiable, sin unicidad. Pero la persona —como enseñan Ortega y Julián Marías— vive _abierta_ a las demás personas, referida a ellas, trascendiendo, por tanto, de sí misma. La mismidad (proyectada hacia el futuro) consiste justamente en esa unicidad y exceder del propio yo. (shrink)

A los extranjeros les gusta odiar España. Los españoles odian amarla. Sin embargo, millones de personas la recorren, seducidos por aquello que critican. El pensamiento de Julián Marías ofrece claves para comprender este fenómeno.

Se ha dicho repetidamente de España que es un país conflictivo, inestable, violento, invertebrado, incomprensible. «Pensé (dijo Marías en uno de los 250 artículos que me dictó a partir del año 2000) que esto se debía a un error de perspectiva: a no ver cómo ha sido y es; a proyectar sobre él imágenes inadecuadas, trasladadas de otros países de distinto origen, formación, proyecto, argumento. España parecía “rara” y escasamente comprensible porque no se reparaba en su realidad. Un pez extraño (...) porque no era un pez, sino un pájaro. Visto así, sorprendentemente inteligible». Por otro lado, se habla últimamente «de “nacionalismo español”, algo inexistente. El nacionalismo es exclusivista, negativo, hostil, reductor; la visión que los españoles han tenido de su país ha sido usualmente lo contrario». Se acepta fácilmente que «España es un país de rupturas, propenso a la discordia». La historia, en cambio, según me dictó Marías en otro artículo, «muestra un grado sorprendente de continuidad. Los cambios de orientación no son excesivos ni bruscos, las variaciones históricas han sido moderadas, comprensibles, las requeridas por la condición viviente de un país». A lo largo «de muchos siglos, lo que sorprende es la coherencia de la historia española, su continuidad». Prueba de ello «es el carácter inteligible de casi toda nuestra historia». Pocas veces ha habido mayor afinidad entre un filósofo y un científico. Este libro (de 191 páginas) descubre cómo Julián Marías conoció a Jérôme Lejeune en 1980, y ambos resultan muy afines: los dos afirman la unicidad (calidad de único) de cada persona, algo que durante la Edad Media se reservaba a muy pocos seres de este mundo: el Sol, la Luna o la Tierra, pero no se aplicaba a cada persona, considerada como miembro de una especie única porque se (...) creía que su principio de individuación era la materia señalada por la cantidad (estos huesos y esta carne, no agotados en cada individuo). Además, se consideraba que solo había persona cuarenta días después de la concepción en el caso del varón, y noventa en el caso de la mujer. El presente libro (que traduce por primera vez al español algunos textos en francés tanto de Lejeune como de Marías y que parte de la genética moderna descubierta por Lejeune, así como de la metafísica de Marías, la cual considera "mi vida" como la realidad radical) muestra cómo estos dos grandes humanistas supieron ir a contracorriente, usando la razón y la ciencia, para proteger al no nacido. La traducción que al inglés hace el ilustre profesor norteamericano Harold Raley (cuya filosofía sigue a Ortega y a Marías) resulta excelente. El profesor Harold Cecil RALEY nació el año 1934 en el Estado de Alabama (USA), en cuya Universidad se doctoró en Lenguas y Literaturas Románicas, y quiso especializarse en la obra de José Ortega y Gasset. Casado y padre de varios hijos, ha sido catedrático de Lengua y Literatura españolas de la Universidad del Estado de Oklahoma desde 1964; (...) también catedrático y decano de Bellas Artes y Humanidades en la Houston Baptist University (nombrado por ella Distinguished Professor). Political theorists have recently sought to replace the liberal, contractual theory of the firm with a political view that models the authority relation of employee to firm, and its appropriate regulation, on that of subject to state. This view is liable to serious difficulties, however, given existing discontinuities between corporate and civil authority as to their coerciveness, entry and exit conditions, scope, legal standing, and efficiency constraints. I here inspect these, and argue that, albeit in some cases significant, such discontinuities (...) fail to undermine the firm/state analogy, either because they are not significant enough to do so or because the particular trait on which they hinge is not decisive for how authority, in the state and in the firm, should be regulated to be legitimate. A pro tanto requirement exists, I thus argue, that corporate authority be held to regulatory norms comparable to those legitimate states abide by, including civil liberties, rule-of-law constraints, and accountability to subjects. The introduction of novel diagnostic techniques in clinical domains such as genomics and radiology has led to a rich ethical debate on how to handle unsolicited findings that result from these innovations. Yet while unsolicited findings arise in both genomics and radiology, most of the relevant literature to date has tended to focus on only one of these domains. In this article, we synthesize and critically assess similarities and differences between “scanning the body” and “sequencing the genome” from an ethical (...) perspective. After briefly describing the novel diagnostic contexts leading to unsolicited findings, we synthesize and reflect on six core ethical issues that relate to both specialties: terminology; benefits and risks; autonomy; disclosure of unsolicited findings to children; uncertainty; and filters and routine screening. We identify ethical rationales that pertain to both fields and may contribute to more ethically sound policies. Considerations of preserving public trust and ensuring that people perceive healthcare policies as fair also support the need for a combined debate. (shrink)

Engineering programs in the United States have been experimenting with diverse pedagogical approaches to educate future professional engineers. However, a crucial dimension of ethics education that focuses on the values, personal commitments, and meaning of engineers has been missing in many of these pedagogical approaches. We argue that a value-based approach to professional ethics education is critically needed in engineering education, because such an approach is indispensable for cultivating self-reflective and socially engaged engineers. This paper starts by briefly comparing two (...) prevalent approaches to ethics education in science and engineering: professional and philosophical. While we acknowledge that both approaches help meet certain ethics education objectives, we also argue that neither of these is sufficient to personally engage students in authentic moral learning. We make the case that it is important to connect ethics education to the heart, which is extensively driven by values, and present a value-based approach to professional ethics education. We provide some classroom practices that cultivate a safe, diverse, and engaging learning environment. Finally, we discuss the implications of a value-based approach to professional ethics education for curriculum design and pedagogical practice, including opportunities and challenges for engineering faculty eager to incorporate value-based inquiry into their classrooms. This paper investigates the fundamental idea at stake in current bioeconomies such as Europe's Bio-Based Economy (BBE). We argue that basing an economy upon ecology is an ambivalent effort, causing confusion and inconsistencies, and that the dominant framing of the damaged biosphere as a market-failure in bioeconomies such as the BBE is problematic. To counter this dominant narrative, we present alternative conceptualisations of bio-economies and indicate which concepts are overlooked. We highlight the specific contradictions and discrepancies in the relation between (...) economy and ecology, and then work towards outlining a genuine and consistent conceptualisation of the BBE. The philosophical perspective of Emmanuel Levinas is employed to develop a more profound understanding of the tensions at stake; Levinas' work is compared with that of Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen's work on bioeconomics, and found to be of complementary value. Our hypothesis is that, rather than the impossible, absolute amalgamation of economy and ecology striven for today, a principal heterogeneity between humankind and nature must be acknowledged if a bioeconomy that truly operates within the carrying capacity of planet Earth is to be achieved. Criminal behaviour is but one behavioural tendency for which a genetic influence has been suggested. Whilst this research certainly raises difficult ethical questions and is subject to scientific criticism, one recent research project suggests that for some families, criminal tendency might be predicted by genetics. In this paper, supposing this research is valid, we consider whether intervening in the criminal tendency of future children is ethically justifiable. We argue that, if avoidance of harm is a paramount consideration, such an intervention (...) is acceptable when genetic selection is employed instead of genetic enhancement. Moreover, other moral problems in avoiding having children with a tendency to criminal behaviour, such as the prospect of social discrimination, can also be overcome. (shrink)

Since 2009, the Norwegian public service broadcaster NRK has produced a number of slow TV shows. Some of the programmes have had a surprisingly big success in terms of public engagement and audience share even though the majority of the audience was from the oldest age groups. These programmes are not only slow, lasting a long time and lacking dramatic development and progress, they also engage in a particular, traditional version of national identity. The current article argues that, through slow (...) TV, the Norwegian public service broadcaster has found a new way to reflect a particular version of Norwegian identity and to tap into the central values of Norwegian culture. Taken together, the shows cover all regions of the country—the coastal areas as well the inlands and mountains. In terms of representation, the programmes highlight nature and traditional Norwegian values such as closeness to nature, rural life, and “friluftsliv” (living the outdoor life). Urban areas and the non-white population are conspicuously absent. (shrink)

This paper provides an empirical and conceptual account on seeing machine learning models as part of a sociotechnical system to identify relevant vulnerabilities emerging in the context of use. As ML is increasingly adopted in socially sensitive and safety-critical domains, many ML applications end up not delivering on their promises, and contributing to new forms of algorithmic harm. There is still a lack of empirical insights as well as conceptual tools and frameworks to properly understand and design for the impact (...) of ML models in their sociotechnical context. In this paper, we follow a design science research approach to work towards such insights and tools. We center our study in the financial industry, where we first empirically map recently emerging MLOps practices to govern ML applications, and corroborate our insights with recent literature. We then perform an integrative literature research to identify a long list of vulnerabilities that emerge in the sociotechnical context of ML applications, and we theorize these along eight dimensions. We then perform semi-structured interviews in two real-world use cases and across a broad set of relevant actors and organizations, to validate the conceptual dimensions and identify challenges to address sociotechnical vulnerabilities in the design and governance of ML-based systems. The paper proposes a set of guidelines to proactively and integrally address both the dimensions of sociotechnical vulnerability, as well as the challenges identified in the empirical use case research, in the organization of MLOps practices. In an increasingly fragmented media environment, some issues stand out and generate huge publicity for a limited period of time. Using Scannell's categories, event and happening, the article analyses two cases – the 1994 Olympic Winter Games and the death of Princess Diana. It is argued that they, in order to account for audience involvement and the complexity of meanings, should be analyzed in relation to the discourses and narrative developments across different media that embed the main, televised, moments. It (...) is also argued that today's proliferation of media channels and the presence of new media can contribute to increasing attention and involvement of the audience. Ceremonial media events that previously dominated have moved in two directions: integrative, entertainment oriented events organized by the media and disaster events. (shrink)

The search for mechanisms has been a common practice in scientific research. However, since the empiricist critique of causality, and especially during the second third of the twentieth century, other non-mechanistic perspectives—especially deductivism—gained predominance. But the sustained effort of authors such as Michael Scriven, Mario Bunge and especially Wesley Salmon contributed to restoring the respectability of causality and mechanisms in philosophy of science. Some members of the causal family, usually lumped under the name of “new mechanistic philosophy”, emphasize the description (...) of mechanisms, especially causal ones, as a central aspect of explanation and other research practices in several areas of science. This approach offers viable solutions to the various ontological and methodological objections that are opposed to the two traditional approaches. In this work the basic characteristics of three philosophies that highlight the description of mechanisms as a central element to explanation and their suitability for the science of ecology are discussed. In contrast to the dominant way of thinking in economics, in which economics is seen as a positive or neutral science, this paper argues that economics is a discipline that has its own normativity. This economic normativity should be distinguished from what is usually considered as ethics, which normally has a broader scope. This paper further argues that the budget constraint is a key source of economic normativity, although it is not the only source. Critical studies in higher education often embrace the ideas of the slowness movement to address time pressure. However, this desirable horizon presents some limitations. On the one hand, by emphasizing solutions at the individual level, boosting slowness may promote tactics incapable of producing changes to the underlying structural dynamics of time pressure. On the other hand, approaches based on slowness may also inadvertently foster a form of ethical paternalism within the context of ethical pluralism by prescribing substantive models of practice (...) ultimately based on ‘do this quickly or do it slowly.’ This theoretical research moves away from the temporal paradigm to that of the way of relating. Building upon the ethical concept of resonance, the approach focuses on a formal critique of the current socioeconomic and ethical dynamics of social acceleration, growth, and innovation that can contribute to projecting non-alienated relationships in higher education. This book, the first comprehensive study in English of Heidegger's philosophy of art, starts in the mid-1930s with Heidegger's discussion of the Greek temple and his Hegelian declaration that a great artwork gathers together an entire culture in affirmative celebration of its foundational 'truth', and that, by this criterion, art in modernity is 'dead'. His subsequent work on Hölderlin, whom he later identified as the decisive influence on his mature philosophy, led him into a passionate engagement with the art of (...) Rilke, Ce;zanne, Klee and Zen Buddhism, liberating him not only from the overly restrictive conception of art of the mid-1930s but also from the disastrous politics of the period. Drawing on material hitherto unknown in the anglophone world, Young establishes a new account of Heidegger's philosophy of art and shows that his famous essay 'The Origin of the Work of Art' is its beginning, not its end.
